Our Approach to Hearing Care and Third-Party Networks

Today’s hearing care landscape is full of new options and buzzwords: “managed care,” “third-party administrators,” “hearing benefit managers,” and “fitting-fee programs.” These programs are often presented as ways to make hearing aids more affordable. On the surface, that sounds like a win for everyone. But at Albrecht Audiology, we’ve chosen not to participate in these third-party-payer networks, and that decision is entirely about you.

We believe better hearing isn’t a one-time transaction or a product off a shelf. It’s a lifelong relationship between you and your hearing care provider that’s built on trust, expertise, and genuine care. That’s something no third-party program can replicate.

What Are Third-Party-Payer Networks?

In simple terms, a third-party-payer network (or third-party administrator, often shortened to TPA) is a middleman between your insurance company, your hearing care provider, and you. Instead of covering your hearing care directly, your insurance company contracts with another company to “manage” hearing benefits. These middlemen promise discounts, but those discounts often come with strings attached like limited device choices, lower levels of service, and confusing fine print.

There are several forms these programs can take:

  • Managed-care hearing programs: These are large networks that control which providers you can see and which hearing aids you can get.
  • Hearing benefit managers: These are third-party companies that design “plans” that sound like insurance but usually aren’t, offering “discounted” hearing aids instead of true coverage.
  • Fitting-fee-only programs: These plans cover just the cost of fitting a hearing aid, not the devices themselves or any follow-up care.

In every version, the result is the same: Your care is managed by a company that doesn’t know you, doesn’t meet you, and doesn’t prioritize your long-term hearing health.

Why We Don’t Work With Them

At Albrecht Audiology, our mission is to deliver personalized, ongoing hearing care that truly improves your quality of life. After years of experience, we’ve seen that third-party networks simply don’t allow us to do that. Here’s why.

  1. Your Hearing Is Unique, So You Should Have Options

No two people hear alike. Your hearing needs are shaped by your work, your home environment, your favorite hobbies, and even the way you communicate with loved ones. That’s why every hearing solution we recommend is carefully chosen for you.

Most third-party networks, however, limit your choices. They might only cover specific brands, models, or tiers of technology; sometimes even older or discontinued devices. That means your options are dictated by a contract, not by what will actually help you hear best.

While the up-front cost might appear lower, you pay in other ways: frustration, limited performance, and devices that don’t match your lifestyle. If we were to join a TPA, we would not get to “pick and choose” which patients those limitations apply to — they would automatically apply to everyone, restricting the personalized care we believe every patient deserves.

We think that’s backward. Your hearing solution should be determined by a professional who listens to you, not by a spreadsheet.

  1. Hearing Aids Are Not “Plug and Play”

Modern hearing aids are miniature marvels of technology — essentially tiny computers that adapt to your listening environment. But like any computer, they need to be set up, personalized, and maintained to perform their best.

Many third-party programs treat hearing aids like retail products. They may ask you to send in a copy of your hearing test, then ship devices directly to your home. That might sound convenient, but it leaves out the most important part: professional fitting and education.

At Albrecht Audiology, your fitting appointment isn’t just about turning on your hearing aids. It’s about learning how to get the most out of them, how to use the features, clean and care for the devices, change batteries, and connect to phones or TVs. We also perform Real-Ear Measurements (REM) to verify that the devices are delivering the correct amplification inside your ear canal — not just what the software predicts. This ensures your hearing aids are calibrated precisely for your unique ear shape and hearing thresholds, not based on averages or assumptions. That’s not a quick “plug-in and go” service, it’s a process that takes time, expertise, and hands-on care.

We include all of that as part of your hearing aid purchase. No hidden charges, no surprise “setup fees,” and no impersonal box on your doorstep.

  1. Real Hearing Care Requires a Real Relationship

Better hearing doesn’t happen in a single appointment. It’s a process that unfolds over time. Your brain adapts to new sounds, your hearing may change, and your lifestyle needs might shift. That’s why ongoing support is essential.

Most third-party-payer networks limit your follow-up visits, often to one or two within the first year. After that, you’re on your own or required to pay out of pocket for additional visits. This model treats hearing care like a one-time service, not the lifelong partnership it should be.

We take a different approach. When you get your hearing aids from Albrecht Audiology, your follow-up care is built in. That’s because we believe our job isn’t finished until you’re hearing comfortably and confidently in every situation.

You deserve consistent, trusted care from the same provider who knows your history, not a random rotation of names in a managed-care network.

  1. The “Savings” Aren’t Always What They Seem

Third-party networks market themselves as cost-saving programs, but the fine print often tells a different story. Many plans require you to pay separate fees for fittings, follow-ups, cleanings, or repairs. Some even take ownership of your hearing aids; meaning you can’t have them serviced anywhere else. Others set the provider’s reimbursement so low that corners must be cut somewhere, often in time spent with patients or in follow-up care quality.

When hearing care is reduced to a series of transactions, it’s the patient who loses.

By contrast, when you pay us directly, every dollar goes toward your care. You get the right devices, unlimited professional support, and peace of mind knowing your hearing health is managed by a team that truly has your best interests at heart.

Our Philosophy: Transparency, Quality, and Long-Term Care

We understand why third-party networks sound appealing. Health care is expensive, and everyone wants to stretch their dollars. However, when it comes to hearing, shortcuts usually cost more in the long run. Devices that aren’t fit properly, lack of follow-up care, and limited support can lead to frustration, early device replacement, or even giving up on hearing aids altogether.

We want you to succeed with your hearing care from day one, and that takes time, expertise, and a relationship you can rely on. Our pricing reflects that commitment. You’ll always know exactly what’s included, and you’ll never be charged separately for things that should have been part of your care from the beginning.

At Albrecht Audiology, you’re not buying a device, you’re investing in better hearing for life.

What If My Insurance Uses a Third-Party Network?

If your insurance company partners with a third-party network, you can still choose to see us for your hearing care. In that case, we simply bill you directly rather than working through the network. You maintain full freedom of choice, in technology, in care, and in provider. We’ll always help you understand your options up front.

Our team is happy to check your benefits, explain what’s covered, and help you make an informed decision about how to use your insurance in the way that best serves you.

The Bottom Line

Our decision not to work with managed care, TPAs, or fitting-fee programs isn’t about rejecting technology or insurance. It’s about protecting the heart of what makes hearing care effective: the relationship between you and your audiologist.

Your hearing deserves more than a discount plan. It deserves personalized attention, professional expertise, and a partner who will be with you every step of the way. That’s the Albrecht Audiology difference, and it’s how we help you experience life to the fullest.
